How can I find out whether my device is 2- or 3-pole?

In order to decide which adapter you need, you have to know whether your device has a 2- or 3-pole plug.

Apart from a few exceptions, you can see the difference quite easily by looking at the plug: 2-pole device plugs have 2 pins, 3- pole plugs have 3.

This is, however, not the case for the Schuko plug normally used throughout Europe. In this case, the earth connection is not made using a 3rd pin but using contact surfaces on the sides of the plug. The British standard plug is yet another exception: if the 3rd pin is made of metal, it is a 3- pole device. In the case of 2- pole devices, this third pin is made of plastic.
